The Sunshine Vitamin
Vitamin D - “the sunshine vitamin”. It’s commonly known as the nutrient largely responsible for strengthening your skeletal system and protecting you against bone conditions like osteoporosis!
But, did you know that vitamin D can do more than just strengthen and protect your bones? Vitamin D is important to your ENTIRE body! Your nerves need it to carry messages between the brain and every body part, and your muscles need it to move. On top of that, Vitamin D strengthens your immune system and wards off harmful bacteria and pathogens!
Your body naturally makes vitamin D when exposed to the sun, however, these days, it’s a little harder for most of us to get the vitamin D we need. With more and more of our jobs and activities moving indoors, getting ample sunlight is a little harder. On top of that, individuals living in cooler climates may have a harder time getting the vitamin D they need. Did you know that in the United States, only those living in the southern half of the country get enough vitamin D throughout the whole year? Also, if you’ve got darker skin, you may not get as much vitamin D due to melanin making it a little bit harder to absorb sunlight.
Thus, it’s important to take your daily dose of vitamin D into your own hands!
